Fans of theMass Effectseries by BioWare have a lot to look forward to in the coming year. On N7 Day 2020, November 7, the developer of the popular sci-fi RPG franchise announced that not only would theoriginal trilogy be remastered as theMass Effect: Legendary Edition, but an entirely new entry in the series was also currently in development.

The firstteaser trailer of the nextMass Effectwas unveiled at The Game Awards 2020 on December 10 and, since then, a bit more news about the upcoming game has come to light, bringing hope to gamers who have justifiable concerns thatMass Effect 5might miss the mark like 2017’sMass Effect Andromeda.

The new game’s project director, Michael Gamble, recently revealed that key team members who worked on the original trilogy will be returning to lend their expertise for the development ofMass Effect 5.Dusty Everman played an important part in bringing the original Normandy to life. Everman leftBioWarefive years ago to found his own studio, but returned to his former employer in October to fill the role of Principal Narrative Designer and work on the newMass Effectgame.

Also joining theMass Effect 5team is Parrish Ley, a BioWare veteran who is currently creative director but served as the cinematic director for the original trilogy. In his 20 years with the company, Brenon Holmes has worked on threeMass Effecttitles, helping to develop the gameplay systems so integral to a solid RPG experience. Now a producer, he will be leaving hiswork with theAnthemteamto focus onMass Effect 5.

Lastly, Derek Watts, the series’ original art director, will also be joining the team for the newMass Effectgame. Watts has been with BioWare since the days ofNeverwinter NightsandStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicand has most recently been working onAnthem.

WhetherMass Effect 5will make its appearance in 2021 is uncertain. Before his recentdeparture from BioWare, then General Manager Casey Hudsonshared that development of the next chapter of theMass Effectuniverse was still in its early stages. But even if the next game in the series doesn’t come out in 2021, fans can be sure that there will be a steady flood of real news, teasers, and rumors to keep them occupied up until launch.
