Netflix has shared the first official trailer for its brand-new upcoming original seriesWednesday, which looks to premiere on the streaming platform in the latter portion of 2022. The anticipated series will focus on the emblematic Addams family’s foreboding daughter, Wednesday Addams, whoScreamandXstar Jenna Ortega will play.
The synopsis of the upcomingWednesdayNetflixseries has been kept quietly under wraps since the streamer announced the series, but the proverbial picture is becoming more evident as its release approaches. The haunting series will center around various murders that afflict a small town where Wednesday ventures to attend Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for outcasts. It’s unclear what role Wednesday will play, but the setting seems appropriate for the ominous character.

The two-minute trailer sets the stage for Wednesday as she attempts to adjust at Nevermore after a bullying incident with her brother led to her expulsion from her previous school. “The only person who gets to torture my brother is me,” states Ortega in the footage before dropping bags of piranhas into a pool to attack the water polo team. The vibrant nature of the footageshowcases Burton’s unique styleas Ortega steps into a nightmare “full of mystery, mayhem, and murder.”
The official first look of the Addams Family provided by Netflix showcases Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez, Jenna Ortega as the grim titular character, and Isaac Ordonez as Wednesday’s woeful brother Pugsley. Well-known director Tim Burton will direct and executive produce the upcoming series. Burton previously passed on the chance to direct the 1991 filmThe Addams Family,which starred Christina Ricci, Christopher Lloyd, Anjelica Huston, and Raul Julia.
Burton directed four of the eight episodes for the upcoming Wednesday series to help establish the overall look and feel of the family. Joining Burton will be Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood to bring the gothic characters to life in Burton’s first dive into television. Atwood has won four awards for her excellent design work on 2016’sFantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, 2010’sAlice in Wonderland, 2005’sMemoirs of a Geisha, and 2002’s Chicago.
The Addams Family is not foreign to many audiences and has taken many forms over the years in the live-action and animated world. The reintroduction will open the door for a new generation of audiences to enjoy the ghoulish family while getting to know one of the more iconic family members. The one notable absence from the trailer was the presence of Uncle Fester, who show creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough stated will be a secret until the series premieres.
