As is the case with everyCall of Dutygame of the past five years or so, 2023’sCall of Dutyentry has suffered from some pretty major leaks over the last few months. While nothing about the game has been officially revealed yet, including even its existence, all leaks seem to suggest that this year’s entry will beCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, a direct sequel to2022’sModern Warfare 2and a continuation of the reboot series that began back in 2019.

According to the leaks,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3will be a fully-fledged “premium” release for the franchise, despite many rumors claiming that 2023’s entry would be a smaller-scale affair. A full campaign mode, multiplayer, and even a zombies mode is rumored to be present in 2023’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. While this version ofModern Warfare 3is sure to be very much its own thing, there are a few key lessons it could learn from the 2011 original.

What 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Can Learn from the 2011 Original

The original 2011Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3launched to a resoundingly positive reception from both critics and fans, scoring 9s and 8s across the board. Coming hot off the heels of theModern Warfare 2+Black Ops1-2 punch,Modern Warfare 3offered yet another complete package of high-octane FPS action, polished to an almost perfect shine. However, it wasn’t without its criticisms.

By far the most prevalent criticisms surroundingCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3on its initial 2011 launch were to do with the game’s campaign mode. ThoughCall of Dutycampaigns aren’t usually long at all, often coming in at around seven or eight hours,Modern Warfare 3’s campaignis a tad shorter than the rest, with an average playtime of about five or six hours. The more important criticism revolved aroundModern Warfare 3’s story, which lacked the same cohesion and tension that the last fewCall of Dutycampaigns had.

Generally speaking,Modern Warfare2019 andModern Warfare 2both had fairly solid campaign modes, with plenty of engaging action set pieces and compelling characters, but they have definitely been lacking in the story department.Modern Warfare 2, in particular, felt like half of a story, with most of its villains and plot threads still at large by the time the credits roll. HopefullyCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 32023 can deliver a more focused and satisfying narrative.

The originalModern Warfare 3’s lack of innovation was also criticized, again mainly centering around its campaign mode. While big action set pieces are always entertaining, they do tend to lose their luster a little when fans have seen them many times before, and this issue is even more prevalent today, after19 mainlineCall of Dutyentries. A lot ofCall of Dutycampaigns tend to fall into the same general rhythms with their set pieces, with a car chase, stealth mission, air gunner mission, and sniping mission all usually making an appearance.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 32023 really needs to start mixing things up a bit more with its own set pieces.

Another huge criticism of the originalCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3was its Wii port, with many critics claiming that the hardware was just too outdated to run such a demanding game. Unfortunately, 2023’sModern Warfare 3could end up making a similar mistake, as according to rumors it’s set to release on both next-gen and previous-gen consoles yet again. It might finally betime forCall of Dutyto leave the PS4 and Xbox One behind.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3is rumored to be releasing in November 2023.
