Insomniac Games has proven itself to be one of Sony’s top first-party studios, creating quality titles and giving birth to some of the most iconic PlayStation mascots, with the likes ofSpyro the DragonandRatchet and Clank. The recent success ofSpider-Manhas reaffirmed the studio’s position, and fans are eagerly waiting in anticipation for the next game in the series.

While the studio itself has mostly remained tight-lipped aboutSpider-Man 2, it seems that there are quite a few tidbits of information available that should help in making an educated guess regarding the game’s release date/window.

Insomniac’s Development Cycles

Insomniac has quite the track record when it comes to developing multiple titles across a long period of time. The studio has consistently juggled multiple titles in development at any given time in its history, and almost each of the studio’s high-profile releases has garnered great critical acclaim and commercial success.Marvel’sSpider-Manunderwent development in 2014, and the studio releasedRatchet and Clankfor the PS4 in 2016before finally releasingSpider-Manin 2018.

This does make it hard to predict the studio’s release schedules, as Insomniac Games quickly followed the release ofSpider-ManwithSpider-Man: Miles Moralesas a launch title for PS5(although the game is available for PS4 as well). The studio has also been working towardsRatchet and Clank: Rift Apart, which is due to release next month, and rumors indicate that aSunset Overdrivesequel might also be in the works. However, reports regarding the game’s development and Sony’s track record with respect to exclusives might hint at something useful.

Spider-Man 2 And Sony

Spider-Man 2hasn’t been announced yet, andSpider-Man’s voice actor Yuri Lowenthal has stated that no voice work has been done. Insomniac Games is presumably working on gameplay development. Additionally, the game’s PS5 exclusivity might indicate that the team might work on the engine to make the most out of the new hardware.

Sony has a track record of generally releasing two big-name exclusives each year, withRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartcoming soon andHorizon Forbidden Westprobably slated for a July-Septemberrelease date. The publisher has a lot to offer in the near future, with the upcomingGod of War"Ragnarok" sequel potentially eyeing the April 2022 slot (despite still being listed for 2021 release) andGran Turismo 7reserved for July-September. This does putSpider-Man 2on a release window of perhaps 2023 or beyond, which seems likely given all of the other already confirmed PS5 games coming soon. Of course, this is all speculation.

A full-fledged sequel would likely take 4-5 years to develop exclusively for the new hardware, which falls in line with the studio’s firstSpider-Mangame, and putting the sequel in a position for release around July-September of 2023. While that leaves another potential AAA exclusive accompanyingSpider-Man 2in 2023, it seems thatForspoken(previously known asProject Athia) should be filling in the shoes for the April 2023 spot. However, upcoming projects from Naughty Dog could very well accompanySpider-Man’s sequel as well, but a lot of that also depends on Sony, Insomniac, and other variables.

Spider-Man 2is rumored to be in development for PS5.
