ThroughoutAnimal Crossing’s long history, it is a well-known fact that its villagers are the life and blood of the games, providing color and sometimes drama to the already fun, relaxing, and charming social simulation seriesthat definitely helped gamers with social distancing. Ever since the release of the first game all the way to the latest installment to the series,Animal Crossing: New Horizons,Nintendo has introduced over 400 villagers, each having their own unique backgrounds and personalities.

In everyAnimal Crossinggame, villagers are categorized into eight categoriesin total. Male villagers are either Cranky, Jock, Lazy, and Smug. While female villagers fall under Normal, Peppy, Sisterly, and Snooty. Of course, while each personality type will bring out a specific behavior to a certain villager, the Cranky personality within the male characters inAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsis probably one of the most interesting ones. Love it or hate it, Cranky villagers are guaranteed to bring drama to anyAnimal Crossinggame, and although most Cranky villagers behave in the same manner, there are some unique villagers inAnimal Crossing: New Horizonswho appear crankier than the rest.

Apollo

Apollo is a cranky eagle villager who has appeared in numerousAnimal Crossinggames starting from the very first one. True to his personality type, Apollo will always appear grouchy and irritable whenever the player approaches them. Similar to most villagers inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, Apollo’s dialogue options are definitely tamer compared to previous entries in the franchise, but he still embodies that snobbish superior attitude. Interestingly enough, severalNew Horizonsplayers have reported that whenever they bump into Apollo in the game, he will rant about having a great day up until encountering the player. Of course, given his long history of being mean to players, Apollo’s grouchiness doesn’t come as a surprise at all.

Chief

On the other hand, Chief, who is a cranky wolf villager who also made his debut in the firstAnimal Crossinggame, still remainsa popular choiceamong veteran and newAnimal Crossingplayers. Just by his looks alone, one can tell that Chief is not the villager that is easy to befriend. Players should be wary that whenever talking to Chief, one must always agree to what he has to say given that he is easily offended whenever someone disagrees with what he has to say. Ever since his first introduction in theAnimal Crossingfranchise, Curt has always been designed to have a permanent facial expression that exudes superiority.

Curt

Similar to Chief, the cranky bear villager Curt gives off a look that says that he is someone that players should not mess with. His appearance in the game has him wearing a shirt that says MVP, which to be honest makes him look like an unimpressed spoiled teddy bear. What makes Curt even more grouchy is his usual and slightly creepy catchphrase, “I’m watching you.” Given that Curt is usually unimpressed by whatever is happening around him, he finds it difficult to mix withPeppy villagers, given that characters under this personality type are too much for him especially when they get overexcited and hyperactive over the most trivial things.

Fang

Fang is a cranky wolf villager that bears a striking resemblance to Chief, given that they both belong to the same species and same personality type. He usually wears a sweater in the game, making him appear like a smart and sophisticated snob. During conversations, Fang would sometimes compliment the player, but his praises are often masked under sarcasm, which will definitely make players think whether they received a compliment, an insult, or both. True to his cranky nature, Fang will be offended whenever the player refuses to do favors for him. Interestingly enough, to add a bit of spice toNew Horizons’island-living, Fang likes to spread rumors about other villagers in hopes of stirring things up and create unnecessary drama.

Gaston

Out of all the villagers that are highlighted in this article, it is obvious that Gaston is one of the crankiest-looking one. This rabbit villager who became popular in most majorAnimal Crossinggames such asNew Leafhas been designed to have a permanent frown. Of course, his mustache only makes Gaston one of the most intimidating villagers in all ofAnimal Crossing, which perfectly suits his cranky personality. Oftentimes, Gaston will challenge players to various competitions and will easily get along with jock, snooty, and other cranky villagers.

Animal Crossing: New Horizonsis out now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
