Yu-Gi-Oh!Master Duelhas only been out for just over a week, and the game has already seen massive success among not only hardcore fans of the long-running collectible card game, but new players as well. The game has already beenbreaking Steam records for card gamessince its surprise launch on January 18th, and its free-to-play model along with generous early-game gem distribution has seen players flock to the digital version. Now, Konami recently announced another major milestone the card game has eclipsed in the short time since its release.
As one of the longest running collectible card games in the industry,Yu-Gi-Oh!fans had been clamoring for an official online platform for several years whenYu-Gi-Oh! Following in the footsteps of franchises likePokemonandMagic: The Gathering, which had previously seen transitions into a digital version, the game has already surpassed expectations with its early widespread popularity. The official announcement through the European Twitter account for theYu-Gi-Oh!TCG confirmed Thursday thatMaster Duelhad already reached 4 million downloads just nine days after its launch. The reveal coincides with Konami beginning to roll outMaster Duel’s mobile version on iOS and Android, with select regions receiving the game first before it slowly releases in other regions. The accessibility of a mobile version ofMaster Duelwill likely benefit the numbers as players are able totake theirYu-Gi-Oh!deck-buildingand dueling on the go.
WhileMaster Duelhas been praised by many members of the game’s community as well as casual fans, the newestYu-Gi-Oh!title has not been without its fair share of criticism. Many fans have criticized the game for a lack of content often attributed to a rushed release, withMaster Duellacking proper online matchmaking outside Ranked Duels and the relatively short Solo Modes. The game’s card pool has also seen significant criticism fromYu-Gi-Oh’s more passionate fans, asthe curated selection ofYu-Gi-Oh!cardsleaves out much of the game’s most recent sets.
WhileMaster Duelhas come under fire for its microtransaction-based monetization model, players have praisedMaster Duel’s crafting systemfor making the game very friendly to free-to-play players throughout its opening weeks.
