BOTW TAPESTRY

Link and Ganon have been connected from the beginning of the reincarnation cycle and curse that all started back withSkyward Swordin theZelda series. The two are forever linked with Princess Zelda, but what will the new title address regarding this never-ending cycle of death and rebirth?

3Does The Tapestry Theory Hold Water?

One of the biggest questions and theories surroundingTears of the Kingdomis can one play as Ganondorf in the new installment? Players have mainly been asking this due to the initial tapestry seen in the firstBreath of the Wildgame, and for the garb that a supposed Link was donning in the trailer. The answer? It’s a bit complicated, but not really. Looking back at the tapestry there is a large monstrosity of a creature in the center. To the left of it, is clearlyPrincess Zelda. To the right, is a hero. Why do players think it is Ganondorf? Well, it just doesn’t look like Link. Zelda looks like Zelda, but Link just does not look like Link. Instead, the hero depicted has a pointed nose and red hair…much like previous Ganondorf depictions.

To be fair, it does not seem likely that Ganondorf will be playable. There isn’t enough evidence to support this theory since the only thing supporting it isthe clothingand not showing Link’s face. These things can easily be contradicted since Link is known to wear clothes from various peoples, times, and places. As for not seeing Link’s face in the trailer, his face is still seen in the teaser and stills. It is easy to avoid the face given the footage was showing off the gameplay more than anything else. As for Ganondorf being a potential hero, well, that actually isn’t so farfetched.

Ganondorf’s backstory is a bit hazy. Most of his potential background is shrouded in a good deal of uncertainty. One thing that is certain regarding this history is that he is forever connected to Zelda and Link due to Demise’s curse. In Skyward Sword the key villains were Ghirahim and Demise. Ganondorf was most likely presented to be Link’s rival Groose. This still has not been officialy confirmed. Who too, had red hair, and a necklace of Din (the God who brought Power to the triforce). He was also said to be the first Gerudo. If the tapestry is indeed depicting Ganondorf and not Link, it is not too out there. After all, if Groose is indeed Ganondorf, he would have been cursed by Demise as well. Since Groose also helped Link and Zelda to trap him. Since the 3 are fated in a bootstrap time paradox (basically they die, reincarnate, and the process repeats as a nonstop circle without an end in sight) there must be deviations of times when Ganondorf wasn’t playing the villain. It’s a big assumption, but it isn’t impossible.

Link time traveling

If Ganondorf is not Groose’s reincarnated self living out his eternal punishment as Demise’s lackey, then where does that connection begin and start? Of course, it can be as simple as Ganondorf just being the forever instrument of Demise. Which isn’t as fun to think about. It is very possible, too, that the monster at the center of the tapestry, if not Ganondorf, could very well be Demise, himself. Even more so, after the malice is no longer in Ganondorf’s body, it has to have somewhere to go.

In the trailer, Link is seen with his arm seemingly absorbing malice. There is a dried up corpse (supposedly Ganondorf) seen in the footage as well. That isn’t the only oddity,Link’s armhas an interesting nail thing going on, and new symbols etched into his arm. Many fans have pointed out that the design is quite similar to Ghirahim, who was a servant to Demise. His arm also seems to have new powers. What does this mean? Well, if Link is indeed havingaPrincess Mononokesituation, than his arm might be either corrupted, have a cool upgrade, or both. His new tattoo could possibly be just Sheikah tech symbols, perhaps.

If his arm is indeed corrupted, what can that mean for the infamous hero? If he is corrupted, chances are is he is now on a journey to not just help Zelda, but to purify himself from being fully corrupted. Is that why Link’s journey is upwards this time? To find ancient methods, histories, or technologies to help him and Hyrule? Is he finally seeking outthe godswho created Hyrule?

1Time Travel?

It would not be too big of a reach or surprise for time travel to be a thing in this title. After all, the map is pretty much the same at first glance, and the only changes are the islands in the sky. To have time travel could provide interesting changes to Hyrule. Not just that, there are more things regarding time to wonder about. The main symbol ofTears of the Kingdomis the well known ouroboros symbol. It is a giant flashing sign that the bootstrap time paradox is at the forefront. For the symbol itself, is usually two serpents biting each other’s tails which is usually used as a sign of infinity.

If the paradox isn’t acknowledged, the idea is front and center, that all three characters are stuck in an infinite cycle. A potential for a deviation in the timeline might be very possible. If there is a deviation, this could change the series in a major way. Regardless of the future of the Zelda series of video games, to have the paradox at the forefront, means that for once, a possible major deviation is likely. If not a deviation, major revelations to the paradox itself could be sought and found.
