OneThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomfan has recently taken online to share a compelling theory about what happened to shrines fromBreath of the Wild. Much likeDivine Beasts vanished fromTears of the Kingdom, the original shrines from the hit 2017 game are also nowhere to be found in its sequel.
Delivering a worthy follow-up on the historic success ofBreath of the Wildwas no easy feat, yetTears of the Kingdommanaged to up the antein nearly every imaginable fashion. Among many other things, the newly released action adventure provides players with an even greater number of miniature dungeons filled with motley puzzles and the occasional combat challenge.

As for what happened to the original 120 shrines fromBreath of the Wild, one fan recently took to social media to posit that the previous set of dungeons collapsed into the ground. That theory is substantiated by the fact that the majority of Chasms leading toTears of the Kingdom’sUnderground Depthsare located in the exact same spots whereBreath of the Wild’sshrines were.
Seeing how the previous game already established that these ancient dungeons sprung up from the ground, the idea of them falling back the way they came definitely doesn’t sound outside the realm of possibility. At least a portion of the player base appears to agree with that sentiment, given how the theory went viral on Reddit earlier this week. Some of the players investigating these claims reported that almost every single Chasm in the game is indeed occupying the spot of aBreath of the Wildshrine.
The sole exception to that trend is the Chasm near Lookout Landing, the first Skyview Tower that players will encounter inThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Speculating about the reasons for this discrepancy, many fans who already discussed the new shrine theory appeared to agree that the Lookout Landing Chasm is essentially a tutorial area. Meaning that Nintendo plausibly didn’t want to risk players missing it, thus incorporating it into the game’s main quest.
Irrespective of what happened toBreath of the Wild’sshrines, it’s likely that their sequel counterparts will keep players occupied for even longer. Not least becauseTears of the Kingdomcontains many more shrines thanBreath of the Wild. This is largely thanks to the addition of the Sky Islands region, which contains dozens of these miniature dungeons to discover, whereas theTears of the Kingdomversion of the Hyrule surface map offers the same number of shrines thatBreath of the Wilddid.
The Legend of Zelda:Tears of the Kingdomis available now on Switch.
